Just as I got the exponential invasion of the buxus moth caterpillar under control, I found that these larvae gobbled up all the leaves of a few hundred Lysimachia punctata. Fortunately, they had finished flowering, but I wonder what that damage does to the plants for next year... I have been forewarned (never saw either in this garden in the Netherlands, where I've lived for 12 years). I picked at least 3000 caterpillars and pupae from a seven metre long buxus hedge (simply pop them into a bowl with water - no need to squash). I only - once a week - sprayed with eco dishsoap/baking soda/olive oil and garlic extract on the hedge, to deter the moths. That really worked! Only doing spot checks now. A labour of love... ;~)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1464426253475508376.post-70511340250971700502023-07-23T09:35:50.859-07:002023-07-23T09:35:50.859-07:00We literally have at least 50 in the soil of our 2...We literally have at least 50 in the soil of our 2 palm trees. We think we removed them all, then they are back. We keep the plants moist as otherwise the palms get brown on tips. The plants have never been outside, so they must have been like that at the store. The larvae crawl across the carpet. Our Jack Russell Terrior is not amused by them. So can you really blame it? Lysimachia nummularia is now considered invasive and the “aurea” cultivar has the ability to revert back to the parent species. It would be wise for gardeners to consider removing it and plant something else.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1464426253475508376.post-68208006799072384312023-06-11T19:42:01.841-07:002023-06-11T19:42:01.841-07:00Find a pot that is 1-2 inches bigger in diameter, ...Find a pot that is 1-2 inches bigger in diameter, and a bit taller, so that the root ball has some room to expand, but not too much, that it swims in moist soil. Use free draining potting soil mix.

You could try using a Hori Hori knife, or a bread knife to cut it in two, and then you can pot it into two planters. But, you'll lose a portion of each division. Also it will leave a lot of space in a new pot, where overwatering can cause root rot. I'd caution against cutting the plant down to 5cm. This will make the hydrangea produce very soft wood, which won't hold the flowers up. The weight of the flowers will cause the plant to droop. A good dead wood clean up in the spring, cutting back to about half is plenty enough. Plus, once the larvae close themselves up between terminal leaves, the birds don't get at them to spare the plants from infestation and they multiply too quickly. There is no shortage of insects, where I am. There are shortage of birds from high-rises and urban development. Smooth hydrangea is a plant that can offer this little caterpillar as food for baby birds. I understand wanting blooms, but one can try to at least leave some larvae for feed ...
